Pre-requisites:
Agile Whole Team Training (or equivalent)

This workshop provides role-specific Scrum Master training that supplements the typical 2-day introduction to Scrum such as the “Agile Whole Team Training” course. After a 2-day Agile course, you’ll be familiar with what Scrum and Agile are.

This workshop gives you a leg up on how to be a great Scrum Master. The workshop primarily consists of hands-on group activities, with more than 20 in all. After this workshop you will be better prepared to support and help to create a high performing Agile Team.

Who Should Attend

Anybody that is or will be taking on any of the roles and responsibilities of a Scrum Master which may include:

  • Scrum Masters
  • Program Managers

  • Anyone identified as a potential Scrum Master

Course Outline

Personal Introspection

“Why do I want to be a Scrum Master?” Includes a skills inventory exercise.

Agile Manifesto

A guided tour of the 4 values and 12 principles of the Agile Manifesto. Includes an exercise to learn more about each value and principle.

Scrum Master

Overview of the roles and responsibilities of the Scrum Master.

Introduction to Agile Maturity

Gain a greater understanding of what Agile maturity looks like and what it takes to achieve it.

Emotional Intelligence

An introduction to the concept and its importance for Scrum Masters. Includes exercises for building self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. This will be used and built on throughout the course.

Active listening

It is hard to help others uncover and solve problems without understanding what the problems are. Active listening is a key skill for an effective Scrum Master. Multiple activities throughout the course help participants to discover and increase their active listening ability.

Facilitation

Facilitation is a core Scrum Master skill which builds on the skills of emotional intelligence and active listening. Through the use of an exercise called the “Facilitation Game” and many opportunities throughout the course, participants will hone their facilitation skills.

Organizational Introspection

What does “Agile” mean in your organization?

Planning

Preparing for and working with the product owner for iteration planning and backlog grooming.

Standups

How to run a great standup.

Iteration review

Preparing and working with the product owner to run a brief yet effective iteration review.

Retrospectives

Preparing and running.

Energizing retrospectives

Retrospective techniques and best practices to go beyond the typical retrospective including timeline, speedboat and many more. Participants will practice the timeline and speedboat methods.

Agile tools

Leveraging information radiators; physical and electronic, tracking progress, and providing transparency to all stakeholders.

Relationships

A strong team requires great relationships between all parties involved: team, product owner, scrum master, and management.

Rules of engagement

A high performance team requires knowing what the rules are. In Agile this means having good agreements in place including: definition of ready, definition of done, and team working agreement.

Team startup

How to effectively stand up a new Agile team. Includes setting up a team room.

Self-organization

How to help the team, their management, the product owner, other stakeholders and the Scrum Master themselves enable the team to self-organize. This builds on all of the topics already covered to this point.
