DEMAND FOR 'BUSINESS SKILLS TRAINING' GROWS AS ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INCREASES IN STRATEGIC BUSINESS DECISION-MAKING

Increasingly, CIO's are relying on IT solutions to play a bigger role in the strategic decision making that guides company business – a trend that is creating an increased demand for non-technical training for IT employees. This trend has fueled the growth and development of Professional Productivity Seminars at national technology consulting, staffing and training firm Eliassen Group, Inc. – including two new courses: Negotiating Skills – A Process, Not an Event; and Virtual Teams – Influencing Without Authority.

As reported in CIO Magazine last year, a survey of 1,420 CIO's cited that 53 percent offer IT employees training in non-IT areas. "These CIOs realize that implementing technology in today's fast pace environment requires IT professionals to have strong 'soft skills' and technical abilities". states Josephine Scrofani, Eliassen Group, VP of Training. "Helping them collaborate better on diverse teams, coach resources, manage time, deliver effective presentations and develop well written documents is critical to achieving success."

Eliassen Group offers a wide array of professional productivity seminars geared towards helping both teams and individuals improve their ability to achieve successful projects. While seminars typically focus on common themes of Management Development, Personal Development and Organizational Productivity, each is customized to meet the specific needs of the organizations' individual dynamics

"No two organizations are the same, in terms of business needs, models and processes – so the employee training and education requirements differ as well," states Scrofani. "Many 'out of the box' training programs don’t address this dynamic. The process for developing Eliassen Group's Professional Productivity Seminars begins with our trainers learning about the specific needs of each organization, and then tailoring the program to match those needs."

Eric More, Eliassen Group, SVP states, "What better alternative than to have a technology company deliver business skills courses for IT professionals? Our instructors not only deliver valuable course content, they also know and work in the technical space every day and are able to relate seamlessly to technical audiences – a great advantage for sure!"

ELIASSEN GROUP: IT CONSULTANTS REPORT MORE JOBS, SLIGHTLY BETTER PAY IN 2005; GROWTH DRIVEN BY HEALTHCARE, PHARMACEUTICAL & FINANCIAL SERVICES

    Boston, MA - (January 26, 2006) –

Over the past year, technology workers are reaping the benefits of more employment opportunities, plus stable and rising compensation levels, according to the results of a just released survey of almost 1,200 IT consultants by Eliassen Group, a leading national specialty technology staffing firm (www.eliassen.com). The highest area of reported growth was in consultant assignments, where 55% of respondents saw an increased amount of opportunities, compared to only 17% reporting fewer jobs. Permanent positions are also on the rise - 40.5% reporting more opportunities - further indications of a growing job market.

    Pay Rate on the Rise
Compensation levels were strong and stable, if not spectacular: 33% reported increased pay rates, 33% reported them as steady, while only 22% experienced decreases. The majority of those increases were in the single digit percentages -58% of respondents citing less than a 10% increase, 29% reporting 10% to 20% increases; and 13% experiencing more than 20% growth in compensation.

"Increasing pay rates is good news for consultants, as it indicates increased demand in the marketplace - and this supports the 30% growth we've observed at Eliassen Group," states Mike McBrierty, vice president of recruiting, Eliassen Group. "However, the data indicates that most increases are modest - single digits - suggesting that workers in long term or permanent positions are still cautious and not jumping back into the consultant arena. This should further drive demand and pay rates; ultimately persuading more workers in permanent positions to shift back to consulting."

"The amount of respondents who reported decreasing pay rates is a bit of a surprise and may be attributed to workers who secured top-dollar, long term contracts at the peak of the tech bubble, and are now experiencing a market correction," he added.

    Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Driving Growth
A variety of industries appear to be driving much of the growth, with respondents pointing to medical/healthcare (46%) and pharmaceutical/biotech (41%) as the areas experiencing the most increased hiring activity. Financial services, software and government also reported as strong job growth; 38%, 30% and 20% respectively.

"The relatively broad array of vertical industries experiencing strong growth is revealing. During the last major 'up cycle' the hot growth was focused primarily in the software/high tech industries - this time it's diverse; healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotech, financial, government," states McBrierty. "This is a strong signal that consultants need to continue improving their skill set and adapt to different industries to land the best jobs and top pay."

Pay Rate & Technology Most Important Criteria
Against the backdrop of these strong signs of a rebounding IT economy, respondents showed signs of slowly becoming more selective when considering new positions. Pay rate (40%) and type of technology (32%) ranked as two most important considerations for selection of an assignment. Company reputation, benefits and industry ranked as the least important deciding factors; 24%, 26% and 27% respectively.

"It's a bit of a surprise that 'company reputation' and 'industry' ranked so low - it's counter to what we typically hear. From a consultant's point of view, as the market becomes stronger they can be more selective and align themselves with the strongest companies and hottest industries," states McBrierty. "This lack of importance in 'reputation' and 'industry' may be a bit of hangover effect from the down turn, when jobs were scarce and workers became less selective. This trend should reverse itself as business continues to strengthen."
